I'm notoriously bad at self-assessment, or so I've told myself for years.
But that isn't true, is it? After all, making that very claim is an assessment of myself.
Recently, a friend encouraged me to flip the question on its head. "Instead of asking yourself what you're skills are, ask yourself 'What are others shockingly bad at?' Look for moments where you question why someone else can't do something easy." At first, this sounded harsh, like judging others as stupid or incapable. After some thought, I realized that it's not at all about seeing others negatively. For those of us bad at self-assessment, we often tend to think that some things are just easy and others are not. But, actually those things may be easy to us because we are skilled at them.
If you are surprised by someone else's inability to do a thing (or do it well), it says more about you than them. You may have found one of your skills.
